DUBAI // A policeman was killed in an accident on Wednesday morning while he was directing traffic on the Emirates Road in Dubai.
Dubai Police named the dead officer as Sergeant Hayan Adel Ali, 24.
Sgt Ali was securing the way for a lorry loaded with asphalt near Al Rawiya bridge when another lorry smashed into the back of his car, killing him instantly.
The driver of the second lorry sustained serious injuries and was taken to Rashid Hospital for treatment.
Maj Gen Mohammed Al Zafeen, head of the Federal Traffic Council, said the young officer’s death carried a terrible message for every driver.
“What happened is something that is tragic, very tragic. On the roads, anything can happen, any kind of incident can happen,” he said.
“Let it be a lesson to people, the roads are not for fun. Everybody who gets behind a wheel should be aware that it is possible they might cause an accident for others and accidentally kill a person. We hope that it does not happen to anyone.”
He passed on his condolences to Sgt Ali’s friends and family, adding: “May his soul rest in peace, this is written and an act of God.”
Maj Gen Khamis Al Mazeina, chief of Dubai Police, also expressed his condolences to Sgt Ali’s family.
