Premier League football club Liverpool have reported star player Mohamed Salah to the police after footage emerged of the Egyptian forward using a mobile phone while driving his car.

The footage captured Salah appearing to use his phone while surrounded by fans after Liverpool opened their Premier League campaign with a 4-0 win over West Ham United on Sunday. Salah, 26, scored the opening goal in the game at Anfield.

On Monday, Merseyside Police said they were aware of the video and Liverpool confirmed they had alerted the police after speaking with Salah about the incident.

The video appears to show Salah with a phone in his hand, and as his car crept forward, he is filmed using both hands on the phone while he sat in traffic.

"The club, after discussion with the player, have made Merseyside Police aware of the footage and the circumstances surrounding its capture," a Liverpool spokesperson said.

"We have spoken to the player also and will deal with any follow-up internally. Neither the club or player will be making any further comment on this matter."

Under UK law, it is illegal to use a handheld mobile phone when driving, even when the car is stationary at traffic lights or in traffic.

"We have been made aware of a video believed to show a footballer using a mobile phone whilst driving," the Merseyside Police said. "This has been passed to the relevant department."

Punishments for using a phone while driving can include a fine of up to £200 (Dh937) and six points on the drivers' license.

Salah, who moved to Liverpool from Roma last summer, enjoyed a remarkable debut season for the club - scoring a record 32 Premier League goals.

The Egypt international has since signed a new five-year contract with Liverpool, making him the highest-paid player at the club.
