It is the season for rebranding, with the owners of Abu Dhabi’s Yas Viceroy the latest hotel to transform into something new this summer.

Abu Dhabi developer Aldar Properties PJSC has announced its partnership with Marriott International (to take effect from July 1) as part of its asset management plan, with the hotel set to become a W Hotel later this year.

The news comes just a week after the Hyatt Hotels Corporation announced that its Capital Gate property would become the Andaz Capital Gate Abu Dhabi during the summer.

The Yas Island property that straddles the Formula One track is to be refreshed and redesigned as part of the changeover with upgrades to its lobby and pool facilities expected. The hotel will remain open during the rebranding process.

“Appointing Marriott International to manage the operations of our Yas Island hotel supports our strategy to employ the most reputable international operators and reflects our active approach to the management of our portfolio,” says Talal Al Dhiyebi, Aldar Properties’ chief executive.

“Marriott International’s experience will ensure guests have a memorable stay at our world-class hotel while driving value for our Asset Management business.”

According to Marriott International, the rebranding will “bring a new dimension to the luxury and lifestyle hospitality offering on the iconic landmark”.

“This hotel marks our 13th property in Abu Dhabi and adds to our diverse brand portfolio in the Capital, complimenting the destination and the diverse traveller it attracts today,” says Alex Kyriakidis, the brand’s president and managing director, Middle East and Africa.

The change in management will see the Viceroy without a hotel presence in the UAE, after its Dubai property was rebranded by Five Holdings shortly after opening on the Palm Jumeirah.

The Yas Island property will be the first W branded hotel in Abu Dhabi.
